Dialysis treatment takes over the regulating and filtering function of the kidneys. There are two different types of dialysis treatments. While haemodialysis (blood cleansing) treats the blood via an artificial filter membrane, peritoneal dialysis uses the peritoneum in a person’s abdomen as the membrane. The decision regarding which type of dialysis to use depends on the individual circumstances of the patient. The indicator in the Swiss Atlas of Healthcare shows the volume of outpatient dialysis treatments, where the volume is described on the basis of costs.
