The ventilation replaces patients’ breathing if their spontaneous breathing stops (apnoea), or is no longer sufficient to maintain their bodily function. Due to insufficient gas exchange, the carbon dioxide content in the body increases while the oxygen level falls. The indicator in the Swiss Atlas of Healthcare shows the frequency of inpatient treatments where patients had to be artificially ventilated for more than 24 hours. Newborns are excluded from the analysis.
