Cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones are antibiotic agents that both have a broad spectrum of activity. Antibiotics stop bacteria growing or kill them. When antibiotics are prescribed, cross reactions should be taken into account and they can also damage the intestinal flora. An additional problem is the emergence of antibiotic resistance. The Swiss Atlas of Healthcare shows how often cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones are dispensed in total by outpatient care providers. The indicator also includes separate analyses on the dispensing of 1st and 2nd generation cephalosporins, 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins, and fluoroquinolones. Only systemic applications are considered (e.g. tablets), while topical applications (e.g. ointments) are not.
