Immunosuppressants are various active substances that inhibit the body’s immune system. They are used to treat inflammatory, often autoimmune conditions (e.g. multiple sclerosis, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, asthma) and often on a lifelong basis after an organ transplant. Because they lower the body’s immune defence, it becomes more susceptible to infection. The Swiss Atlas of Healthcare shows immunosuppressants dispensed by outpatient care providers.
