A urinary catheter is a tube that is inserted into the bladder to drain urine. A urinary catheter is usually fitted if the patient is no longer able to pass water on their own. This may be the result of an underlying disease, taking certain medications, or after surgery. The Swiss Atlas of Healthcare contains analyses on the frequency of urinary catheterisation in outpatient settings. In inpatient settings urinary catheterisation is not systematically recorded according to the applicable coding regulations as it is a routine procedure.
