An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the vermiform appendix. It is usually performed due to an infection of the appendix (appendicitis). The surgery can be performed in the conventional way (open surgery with abdominal incision) or using laparoscopy (minimally invasive, without the need for a larger incision). The Swiss Atlas of Healthcare contains analyses on the frequency of appendectomies in inpatient settings and the total number of procedures including appendectomies performed in outpatient settings. Due to the small number of cases, outpatient procedures are not shown separately. Inpatient procedures are also broke down into laparoscopic surgery and open surgery. The coding of open surgery has only been explicitly possible since the 2017 CHOP catalogue was introduced, which is why this aspect is only shown from 2017.
