An initial knee replacement means the first time a knee prosthesis is surgically fitted. A knee replacement is advisable, for example, in patients with severe knee arthritis or after an accident. The prosthesis is made of metal and/or plastic components and is firmly fixed in the bone. The indicator in the Swiss Atlas of Healthcare contains analyses on the frequency of initial knee replacements performed in inpatient care facilities in patients with degenerative diseases, as well as the total initial implants performed in inpatient facilities (including in traumatology).
