Sepsis (also called blood poisoning) is a life-threatening medical emergency caused by a bacterial infection in the body. A local infection can spread throughout the body and damage various organs, which in the worst case may fail. Clinical signs of sepsis include fever, chills, sudden confusion or disorientation, low blood pressure and rapid breathing with feeling very unwell. It can be caused by pneumonia, urinary tract infections, abdominal inflammation, infected wounds and meningitis. The infection should immediately be treated with antibiotics. The indicator in the Swiss Atlas of Healthcare shows the frequency of inpatient treatment of patients with sepsis.
