Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates glucose uptake by the body’s cells. It is used to treat diabetes mellitus. Insulin cannot be taken in pill or capsule form as it is broken down in the stomach. Insulin is administered by injection under the skin or in the form of insulin pumps. The Swiss Atlas of Healthcare shows insulin dispensed by outpatient care providers.
