Beta blockers are active substances that lower blood pressure and heart rate by inhibiting the effect of the stress hormone adrenaline and the neurotransmitter noradrenalin, thereby relieving pressure on the heart muscle. They are therefore used to treat high blood pressure, coronary heart disease and chronic heart failure (cardiac insufficiency). The Swiss Atlas of Healthcare shows beta blockers dispensed by outpatient care providers.
