Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are a group of medicines that inhibit gastric acid secretion from the glands in the lining of the stomach. They are therefore used to treat damage to the gastric or oesophageal mucosa, for example, in the case of heartburn, stomach inflammation or peptic or duodenal ulcers. The Swiss Atlas of Healthcare shows proton pump inhibitors dispensed by outpatient care providers.
